Columbia University’s Office of the Executive Vice President for Research sponsors RISE annually to seed bold ideas and build new research partnerships. Established in 2004 as the Research Initiatives in Science & Engineering competition, the program supports very early-stage, high-risk, potentially high-impact collaborations in the basic sciences, engineering, and medicine.
RISE seeks groundbreaking interdisciplinary work that can lead to novel discoveries and position teams for conventional external funding. Collaborations may span departments, schools, or campuses, including researchers from other disciplines working with science, engineering, or biomedical researchers. Developing an instrument or methodology that enables new discoveries may fit the program, but developing an instrument for commercialization does not.
