Commercial Building Energy Audit Program supported rural Alaska commercial building owners and fishing vessels with energy audits to identify efficiency measures and quantify potential improvements.
Funder: Alaska Energy Authority
Due Dates: June 2019 (Program ended; no future application dates announced)
Funding Amounts: Energy audits provided; separate USDA REAP improvement grants described as covering up to 25% of analyzed upgrade costs
Summary: Supported energy audits for rural Alaska commercial buildings and commercial fishing vessels to identify and quantify energy efficiency improvements.
Key Information: The program served areas outside the Municipality of Anchorage, defined as rural by USDA.
The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) administered the Commercial Building Energy Audit Program with funding through the USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). It provided high-quality energy audits for rural commercial building owners and commercial fishing vessels, identifying efficiency measures specific to each structure and quantifying the value of potential improvements.
The resulting energy reports helped owners assess upgrades and apply for separate USDA REAP energy efficiency improvement grants for work analyzed in those reports. The program addressed nonresidential buildings, which account for more than half of Alaska’s building energy consumption and are mostly privately owned. The audit program ended in June 2019; AEA expressed hope that it could offer the opportunity again.
