Description
The State of Wisconsin funds the Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Program, which is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) with research and data support from the Universities of Wisconsin. It supports agricultural producers conducting on-farm studies of commercial nitrogen application over at least two growing seasons. UW monitors projects on-site and helps manage the resulting data.
The program seeks to answer producer-specific research questions, improve nitrogen management efficiency and producer returns, and reduce nitrate in surface water and groundwater. Studies may examine nitrogen rates, nitrogen use efficiency, or management practices such as application timing and cover crops. DATCP prioritizes innovative work, projects in different parts of Wisconsin, and studies lasting longer than two years.
