Description
The Recreation and Conservation Office’s Community Forests Program helps Washington communities acquire and manage working forestland for long-term public benefit. It aims to prevent forest fragmentation and development while sustaining forest products, economic opportunities, environmental services, and places for recreation, education, and cultural enrichment. Community input helps shape how each forest is managed and how its benefits are shared.
Every project must purchase forestland in fee-simple title. Applicants may also propose forest or habitat restoration and compatible recreational facilities on the acquired property, such as trails, campgrounds, or interpretive displays. Acquired property must remain forestland permanently and be available for public use, subject to permitted access restrictions.
