Description
The Community Parks and Playgrounds Program is a competitive capital grant program administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Program Open Space Local. It supports established communities by restoring existing parks and green spaces and creating new recreational spaces in Maryland’s cities and towns. The program addresses unmet recreation needs in older neighborhoods and intensely developed areas.
Eligible work includes new parks, park rehabilitation and expansion, playground equipment, environmentally oriented recreation projects, new or extended trails, water recreation access, and land acquisition for new parks. Nature Play Spaces are also eligible. Capital costs for park development and improvement receive the highest priority over land acquisition. Sustainability and energy efficiency are key considerations.
