Description
The New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), supports new adult psychiatry residency positions for trainees beginning July 1, 2027. State Fiscal Year 2027 funding supports fifteen positions through four years of training, from PGY1 through PGY4, alongside faculty supervision and mentorship. Each of New Jersey’s thirteen psychiatry residency programs may request one position, with capacity-based awards for one or two additional positions.
The initiative addresses New Jersey’s psychiatrist shortage by expanding training opportunities and strengthening residents’ experience in the public behavioral health system. Funded residents must receive community-based training serving people with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and other underserved populations. The program encourages recruitment of qualified candidates likely to remain in New Jersey and practice in public-sector behavioral health after graduation.
