Summary: Supports Diversion to Care work to improve justice system responses to substance use disorder and reduce exposure to arrest and incarceration.
The Office of Grants and Research (OGR) has secured federal Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program funding to develop and implement a Diversion to Care project. The initiative uses a responsive and adaptive approach to reduce criminal justice system exposure for individuals experiencing substance use disorder, expanding evidence-based harm reduction and addiction treatment resources as alternatives to incarceration.
The project also aims to develop community-specific, culturally responsive advisory systems and improve the crisis care continuum to deflect individuals who use substances from arrest and incarceration. Integrating peers and people with lived experience into deflection activities, alongside improving real-time data collection, are central priorities.
