Description
The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program provides federal funding for transportation projects and programs that help meet Clean Air Act requirements. In Washington, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) allocates funding to metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) for work that reduces congestion and improves air quality.
The program focuses on areas that do not meet national air quality standards for ozone, carbon monoxide, or particulate matter, as well as former nonattainment areas now in compliance. WSDOT bases MPO allocations on 2020 Census populations to continue investments in affected areas. The Puget Sound Regional Council also receives a separate allocation for fine particulate matter (PM2.5).
