Description
The Conservation Buffer Initiative, administered by the Maryland Department of Agriculture under its Ecosystem Incentives Program, is a pilot program designed to encourage the installation of streamside and field-ditch buffers on agricultural land in Maryland. The initiative aims to improve local water quality, protect soil resources, and provide flexible management options for farmers and landowners. Distinct from the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), this program offers additional features such as eligibility for buffers on field ditches, shorter contract terms, and a one-time $1,000 per acre bonus for planting forest buffers. Incentives are available for both new and improved forest or grass buffers, as well as watercourse access control areas adjacent to pastures.
