Cornell University’s Society for the Humanities and Department of Linguistics jointly sponsor this two-year teaching-research fellowship for the 2027–28 and 2028–29 academic years. It supports scholars who take a linguistic approach to problems of broad humanistic significance. Relevant subfields include historical linguistics, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, computational linguistics, phonology, and sociolinguistics.
The program seeks candidates who can communicate with and learn from both linguists and scholars in philosophy, literature, history, and anthropology. Fellows reside at Cornell in Ithaca, New York, with a departmental affiliation and a joint appointment with the Society for the Humanities. Alongside scholarly research, they teach small seminars connecting their research and linguistic methods to broader humanistic topics and participate in the Society’s interdisciplinary scholarly community.
