The Council Exemplary Service Award, established by the Society of American Archivists (SAA) Council in 1980, honors individuals, groups, or organizations for special contributions to the archives profession—especially to SAA—that do not qualify for other SAA awards. This recognition is intended for exceptional service or achievements that advance the profession or the organization in ways not otherwise acknowledged by existing SAA awards. The award is conferred on an occasional basis at the discretion of the SAA Council or upon recommendation from the Awards Committee.
