Description
The Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) administers this program to help county governments rehabilitate historic courthouses. The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation provides administrative support. Established by the state legislature in 2005 after a statewide courthouse assessment, the program pairs state grants with county matching funds to preserve public buildings important to Washington’s architectural and cultural heritage.
Funding is directed toward courthouse rehabilitation and preservation, particularly work on historic exterior and interior character-defining features. Accessibility, structural, and life-safety improvements may be supported when undertaken with historic rehabilitation. The program also aims to foster economic development in the communities these courthouses serve.
