Description
The Cromwell Fellowships support research and writing in American legal history by early-career scholars. Funded by the William Nelson Cromwell Foundation and administered through the American Society for Legal History (ASLH), the program supports doctoral dissertations or equivalent projects, as well as first major monographs and research projects by recent graduate-degree recipients.
The program seeks projects that place law, broadly construed, at the center of historical inquiry and contribute new knowledge about it. Successful proposals explain the relevance of law to their research, engage with relevant scholarship, and show what the project adds to the field. The Foundation was established in 1930 to encourage legal history scholarship, particularly concerning the colonial and early national periods of the United States.
