Description
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) supports statewide organics management programs that expand participation in Minnesota’s organics recycling system and reduce wasted food and food scraps sent to landfills or incinerators. Funding supports organics collection programs, outreach and education that improve or increase recycling, and market development for finished compost and anaerobic digestion outputs.
The grant is part of Minnesota’s climate-smart food systems initiative, led by MPCA with other state agencies, local governments, and Tribal Nations and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program. Composting and anaerobic digestion reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with landfilling or incineration while producing useful products, including compost, digestate, and biogas.
