Summary: A fellowship introducing neurosurgical residents to socioeconomic issues and organized neurosurgery through participation in CSNS activities.
Key Information: Applicants must belong to AANS or CNS and commit to attending both semi-annual CSNS meetings.
The Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) created this fellowship in 1999 to provide socioeconomic education for neurosurgical residents. Over a one-year term, fellows participate in the council’s activities and learn how organized neurosurgery responds to the external forces affecting the profession. The educational scope ranges from the workings of CSNS to the effects of federal regulations and market forces on neurosurgical practice.
The experience combines mentorship, attendance at semi-annual meetings, and active committee work. Fellows contribute to projects such as manuscripts, white papers, position statements, resolutions, or ongoing committee initiatives. Its purpose is to give young neurosurgeons broad exposure to socioeconomic concerns and help them understand how they can shape the profession’s response.
