Key Information: Projects must involve a cultural organization, the community, and at least one other organization or service provider.
The Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA) supports arts and cultural initiatives that strengthen social connection, belonging, and well-being across rural Washington. The program responds to limited resources for activities that foster civic participation and community cohesion, drawing on research linking arts participation with reduced stress, anxiety, and isolation.
Projects may span any creative discipline and must be public and participatory. ArtsWA emphasizes in-person activities but also welcomes collaboratively structured online activities that alleviate loneliness, especially among older adults. The program is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts and prioritizes communities with strong agriculture-based economies and generational agricultural and food-processing workers, as well as organizations funded in its FY26 pilot phase.
