Joseph A. Cushman Award for Student Research supports master's and doctoral students studying fossil or living foraminifera to advance research in systematics, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, and ecology.
Funder: Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research
Due Dates: March 1, 2027 (Annual proposal deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to $3,000 per award; funds available for the following year
Summary: Supports master's and doctoral student research on the systematics, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, and ecology of fossil or living foraminifera.
Key Information: Applicants must be Cushman Foundation members at the time of application.
The Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research established this student research award in 1985 to honor Joseph A. Cushman. It supports developed master's and doctoral research projects on the systematics, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, and ecology of fossil or living foraminifera. Geochemistry connected to any aspect of living or fossil foraminifera is eligible, provided applicants explain that connection; research using microfossils only as geochemical indicators is not funded.
Supported projects have examined coastal foraminiferal biodiversity, host–symbiont interactions, climate-change responses, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, biostratigraphic correlation, and geochemical microanalyses related to ecology. The Foundation's Board of Directors selects awards based on scientific merit and financial need.
