Dam Safety Grants
Dam Safety Grants support Minnesota local governments in repairing, reconstructing, or removing dams to reduce safety hazards, restore stream function, and improve habitat, water quality, and recreation.

Description
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administers Dam Safety Grants under Minnesota Statutes, Section 103G.511. The program supports local government projects to repair, reconstruct, or remove dams, using state bonding appropriations approved through legislative action. Priorities include improving important or hazardous dams and removing abandoned and nonfunctional dams.
Some older dams no longer provide benefits sufficient to offset their public safety hazards, environmental damage, or repair and maintenance costs. Dam removal or modification also supports the Ecological and Water Resources Division’s stream restoration initiative. Restoring stream function and stability is intended to eliminate safety hazards and improve property values, fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, water availability, and recreation.
