The David J. Weber Fellowship is a residential research fellowship administered by the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Funded by the late Bill and Rita Clements and an anonymous donor in memory of David J. Weber, it gives a scholar dedicated time to complete a first book on Texas, the American Southwest, or the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
The fellowship carries no teaching responsibilities, allowing the fellow to concentrate on manuscript development and participate in the Center’s intellectual life. A central feature is a manuscript workshop: scholars read a draft circulated in advance, critique it, and advise the author on strengthening the book. Research and travel support and a publication subvention complement this focus on bringing a book-length project to completion.
