The David Levering Lewis Biography Fellowship at the Leon Levy Center for Biography supports biographers and historians writing about the African Diaspora. It forms part of the Center’s annual fellowship program supporting the research and writing of outstanding biographies. Based at the CUNY Graduate Center, the Center connects independent and university-affiliated biographers across disciplines.
The fellowship is named for David Levering Lewis, professor emeritus of history at New York University and a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. Lewis received the Pulitzer Prize for each volume of his biography of W. E. B. Du Bois. The program welcomes both first-time and established biographers, with preference given to applicants who have not previously published a biography or received a fellowship to write one.
