Dean Amadon Research Grant supports researchers studying raptor distribution, systematics, and taxonomy to understand where birds of prey live, why they occur there, and how populations vary.
Funder: Raptor Research Foundation
Due Dates (Anticipated): June 2027 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to $5,000 plus waived Journal of Raptor Research page charges; one grant annually
Summary: Supports research on raptor distribution, systematics, and taxonomy, including geographic variation, migration, and habitat use.
The Dean Amadon Research Grant, administered by the Raptor Research Foundation (RRF), assists researchers studying the distribution and systematics, or taxonomy, of raptors. Its scope includes molecular research and differential migration among populations from different geographic regions. Distribution studies should address where raptors live or why they occur there. Past funded work has examined genetic diversity, population structure, habitat use, nesting territories, and the effects of natural and human-caused disturbance.
The grant honors Dr. Dean Amadon, former Lamont curator of birds at the American Museum of Natural History and president of the American Ornithologists’ Union. His donation of AT&T stock to RRF in the late 1990s helped establish the grant through the foundation’s Memorial Endowment Fund.
