The Deborah Wong Research & Publication Award is an annual program of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) supporting scholars from marginalized groups. It funds research, publication, or projects combining both activities, with support available for any expenses integral to research or publication in ethnomusicology.
The award centers on the significance of a project’s contribution to the field. The Deborah Wong Research & Publication Award Committee reviews submissions and determines awards, with preference given to untenured faculty and early-career non-academic applicants. Supported work has addressed a broad range of subjects, including community collaborative musicking and archiving in the minority Nepalese Canadian diaspora, Mongolian urtyn duu singers, Afro-Dominican music and identity, and folk music as intangible cultural heritage in mainland China.
