Description
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) administers State Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grants with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The program supports projects that reduce harmful diesel emissions and exposure, particularly from fleets operating in areas EPA has designated as having poor air quality. Its goal is to protect human health and improve air quality through environmentally and economically beneficial upgrades.
The 2026 competition funds replacements of eligible on-road vehicles, school buses, marine engines and vessels, and non-road vehicles and equipment. Cleaner diesel, alternative-fuel, low-NOx and zero-emission replacements are supported where eligible. Rhode Island places particular emphasis on zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty on-road vehicles; school bus replacements must be zero-emission.
