    Description

UL Research Institutes (ULRI), a nonprofit safety science organization, runs Discoveries in Safety Grants through an open, competitive process. The program supports scientific discovery that advances public safety and ULRI’s goals of building resilience for a sustainable future, advancing individual and societal health, and promoting safety at the human-digital interface. Research topics are announced at the beginning of each grant cycle.

The 2026 priorities covered respiratory protection for first responders exposed to toxic wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire smoke, recovery of critical minerals from energy-storage devices, chemical emissions and residual ash from WUI fires, and mineral fiber emissions and transport. These priorities seek practical protection technologies, cost-effective recycling with minimal environmental impact, and better characterization of fire-related exposures.
