The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) supports outstanding doctoral dissertation research that advances understanding of chronic brain injury, its causes and consequences, and ways to mitigate its effects. The program is part of BIAA’s broader research initiative, “Finding Cures for Chronic Brain Injury,” which addresses brain injury as a potentially lifelong condition affecting health, independent function, and participation in society.
Dissertations may use quantitative or qualitative methods, original data collection, or secondary data analysis. For the 2026 competition, BIAA explicitly welcomed both animal and human projects and emphasized that secondary data analysis is eligible. Research must align with BIAA’s priorities for the chronic phase of acquired brain injury; proposals addressing only acute injury processes do not meet those priorities.
