Description

The German Historical Institute Washington (GHI) awards short-term fellowships to European and North American doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars conducting primary-source historical research. Its priority fields include German and European history, German-American relations, and the role of Germany and the United States in international relations. European scholars may also apply for work in North American and Pan American history, including Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Projects must use historical methods, engage with relevant historiography, and require primary research principally located in North America. The program supports research rather than preliminary exploration or manuscript writing and revision. GHI particularly welcomes applicants without funding from their home institutions and gives clear priority to postdoctoral projects intended for a second book, including a Habilitation or pre-tenure equivalent.
