Dr Euan MacKie Legacy Fund supports researchers with radiocarbon dating and isotope analyses to investigate Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age Scotland, including past diets and geographic provenance.
Funder: Society of Antiquaries of Scotland
Due Dates: November 30, 2026 (Annual closing date) | April 30, 2027 (Annual closing date)
Funding Amounts: Up to £2,000 for scientific analyses
Summary: Supports scientific analyses relating to Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age Scotland, including radiocarbon dating and isotope studies.
Key Information: All funded analyses must be undertaken at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC).
The Dr Euan MacKie Legacy Fund is administered by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and pays for scientific analyses relating to Neolithic, Bronze Age or Iron Age Scotland. Established through a donation from Dr MacKie’s family, it reflects his interests in Scottish archaeology. Applications studying brochs, duns, vitrified forts and stone circles are especially encouraged.
The fund supports radiocarbon dating alongside isotope analyses that can investigate past diets and geographic provenance. Available techniques include stable carbon, nitrogen and sulphur isotope analysis of bone collagen, and strontium and oxygen isotope analysis of tooth enamel. SUERC works with successful applicants to achieve the best possible analytical results. Awards are recommended by the Society’s Grants and Awards Committee and approved by its Council.
