The BME Events and Activities Small Grants Scheme supports Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) history in the UK. Launched in 2019, it responds to under-representation, structural inequalities and racism in UK higher education, highlighted by the Royal Historical Society’s report on Race, Ethnicity and Equality. The Social History Society administers the scheme in partnership with the Economic History Society and other historical organisations.
The scheme supports activities and events run by BME historians working in the UK, or activities exploring the histories of BME people. Funded work can include research, conferences, workshops and symposia, alongside public history activities such as exhibitions, walking tours, performances and podcasts. It is open to historians working both within and outside universities, as well as independent scholars, retired staff and students.
