Description
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) administers Education for Homeless Children and Youth grants using federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act funds. The program supports Wisconsin local educational agencies in helping children and youth experiencing homelessness access the same free, appropriate public education, including preschool education, as their peers. Its goals include removing barriers to enrollment, attendance, and academic success.
The program offers two approaches. Innovation grants support needs-assessment- and data-informed practices that go beyond McKinney-Vento compliance, with an academic component and strategies intended to continue after the grant. Compliance grants support action steps toward pre-written goals, with targeted DPI technical assistance to help recipients reach full compliance and improve in a chosen focus area.
