Description
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG), administered in Ohio by the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS), supports crime prevention and control activities shaped by local needs. It combines the former Byrne Formula and Local Law Enforcement Block Grant programs, allowing agencies to prioritize justice funding. OCJS prioritizes evidence-based programs and practices.
The program supports drug task forces, law enforcement programs and equipment, crime prevention, corrections and reentry, courts, defense and prosecution, and victim services. It also funds cross-systems training, information sharing, research and evaluation, and planning for new projects. Goals include reducing organized crime, expanding community-based alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders, promoting fair treatment, and helping victims recover. Research projects should use scientific methodologies to advance understanding of emerging crime and justice issues in Ohio and inform policy.
