Description
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is a primary source of federal criminal justice funding for states and local jurisdictions. Rhode Island’s Public Safety Grant Administration Office administers the program, which replaced the former Byrne Formula and Local Law Enforcement Block Grant programs. JAG supports criminal justice or civil proceedings through personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, and information systems.
Supported work includes law enforcement, prosecution and courts, prevention and education, corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, victim and witness services, and planning and technology improvements. Research and evaluation, including forensics, are also supported activities. JAG and the Office of Justice Programs prioritize civil rights and equity, access to justice, community safety, support for people affected by the justice system, and trust between law enforcement and communities.
