Description
The Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) is administered federally by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It supports a comprehensive all-hazards preparedness system by helping develop and sustain emergency management capabilities across five mission areas: prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery. The program addresses preparedness for human-caused, technological, and natural hazards.
Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) serves as both Iowa’s designated state administrative agency and its emergency management agency. HSEM receives Iowa’s designated federal allocation upon successful application approval and determines whether and how to distribute funding to localities. Local support is intended to help emergency management commissions maintain comprehensive emergency management systems.
