The South Carolina Arts Commission’s Emerging Artist Grants combine artwork-creation funding with mentorship and professional support for individual artists active for one to five years in their discipline. The program also serves experienced artists beginning careers in a substantially different discipline. Its goals are to deepen artistic practice, encourage career growth, relevance, and sustainability, and provide opportunities for professional development and collaboration.
Projects may be multidisciplinary but must align with the artist’s selected primary discipline. Funding supports actual project costs, including supplies, materials, equipment, furniture, and professional services. Alongside their projects, grantees participate in cohort meetings, individual mentorship with the artist development manager, and virtual learning activities. Mentorship focuses on professional development, career goals, and sustainability rather than exclusively on discipline-specific instruction.
