Emerging Contaminants (EC) and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Funding supports California water systems' drinking water projects to reduce exposure to PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
Funder: California State Water Resources Control Board
Due Dates: Rolling (applications accepted continuously)
Funding Amounts: Up to 100% of eligible costs for disadvantaged or under-25,000 systems; up to 50%, capped at $25 million per system, for larger non-disadvantaged systems
Summary: Funds California drinking water projects that address PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
Key Information: A project’s primary purpose must be to address PFAS or another eligible emerging contaminant in drinking water.
The California State Water Resources Control Board administers this Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding to reduce exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other emerging contaminants through drinking water. The broader initiative also seeks to address contaminant discharges through wastewater and potentially nonpoint sources. Its drinking water funding includes Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Emerging Contaminants (DWSRF EC) principal forgiveness and Emerging Contaminants in Small or Disadvantaged Communities (EC-SDC) grants.
Eligible drinking water work can include treatment facilities, new water sources, consolidation with another system, connections for private wells, and planning and design. PFAS projects are prioritized. Most construction projects are expected to follow the criteria in the DWSRF Intended Use Plan and Emerging Contaminants Supplemental Intended Use Plan.
