Description
The American Psychiatric Association's Workforce Development Initiative provides a range of programs and fellowships designed to build a diverse and skilled pipeline of future leaders in psychiatry. Supported by the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program, these offerings span the academic continuum—from high school through residency—and deliver experiential learning, expert-led curricula, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. The initiative aims to increase the number and expertise of psychiatrists, particularly those focused on mental health and substance use disorders, and to equip participants with up-to-date knowledge in prevention, treatment, and recovery support.
Programs include:
- Vanguard Resident Fellowship: For psychiatry residents (PGY-1 or higher), supporting capstone projects, leadership development, and APA meeting participation.
- Emerging Psychiatrists Program (EPP): For medical students, with virtual learning, exposure to subspecialties, and a publishing certificate.
- Future Leaders in Psychiatry Program (FLIPP): For university students, offering MCAT prep, career development, and mentorship.
