Description
South Arts’ Emerging Traditional Artists Program supports a new generation of folk and traditional artists demonstrating skill, commitment, and leadership within their cultural communities. Part of the In These Mountains, Central Appalachian Folk Arts and Culture initiative, the program also serves eligible Delta Regional Authority communities and members of recognized Native American tribes. Supported practices include foodways, handcraft, storytelling, music, and dance.
Artists shape their own learning opportunities to deepen their practice and strengthen its impact within their communities. Funding can support training, continuing education, collaboration, networking, promotion, and tools for an effective online presence. Workshops and peer mentorship build relationships across geographic boundaries, encourage advocacy for traditional culture, and deepen participants’ understanding of public arts support. Traditions need not originate in the South: practices sustained, adapted, or blended within Southern communities are eligible.
