The award is designed to encourage and support writers and writer-illustrators from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds in American children’s literature. The program provides recipients with professional development opportunities, industry exposure, and guidance to help them bring their stories to young readers. Each year, two individuals are selected to receive conference tuition, publicity, and mentorship aimed at fostering their careers in children's publishing.
