Description
The Association for Women in Mathematics established the Emmy Noether Lectures in 1980 to honor women who have made fundamental and sustained contributions to the mathematical sciences. Rather than funding a specified research project, the award recognizes lasting mathematical achievement through an annual one-hour expository lecture at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, a monetary prize, and public recognition.
The series honors Emmy Noether (1882–1935), whose life and work remain an inspiration to mathematicians. Renamed the AWM-AMS Noether Lecture in April 2013, it became jointly sponsored by AWM and the American Mathematical Society in 2015. The award recognizes a career of distinguished research, and nominations of women from underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged.
