Description
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, supports world-leading research groups through programme grants. These investments bring internationally recognised scientists or engineers together around one strategic research theme, supporting a coherent programme of interrelated activities rather than a collection of smaller grants. Most successful applications are expected to be interdisciplinary and collaborative, although programmes can address major challenges within a single discipline.
The scheme combines longer-term stability with flexibility to pursue open-ended problems, conduct feasibility studies and respond to emerging opportunities. It seeks stronger university partnerships, engagement with industry and other researchers, greater national and international visibility, and advocacy for UK science. Teams should also give early career researchers greater independence, responsibility and opportunities for career development.
