    Description

The Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) established its Small Grants in Aid of Research program in 1999 to support marine mammal research in countries and regions where scientists have limited access to funding. Grants directly support field research through essential equipment, travel to field sites, and other fundamental research components. The program prioritizes work that advances scientific understanding and conservation of marine mammals, with review focused on research significance, appropriate methods and analysis, feasibility, and applicant qualifications.

The program was renamed in honor of Dr. Eric A. Ramos following his death in December 2024, recognizing his commitment to mentoring, inclusivity, and early-career scientists. Funding comes from Dolphin Quest, Quelonia Limited, and private donors from the Society.
