This award honors exceptional scholarship in African American theatre, drama, and performance studies, alternating annually between a published book-length project (monograph or essay collection) and a scholarly essay. The work must focus on African American theatre history, dramatic literature, or performance studies, and must have been published within the two years preceding the award cycle. The award celebrates originality, critical rigor, demonstrated expertise, and the potential to encourage future scholarship that strengthens the field.
