Description
The Erwin O. Smigel Award, administered by the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), helps unemployed and severely underemployed sociologists attend the society’s Annual Meeting. Established in 1975, the fund provides assistance based on demonstrated financial need, supporting transportation and registration costs for participation in the main meeting rather than an adjacent workshop or meeting.
The award supports sociologists presenting papers or participating as elected or appointed SSSP officers or committee members. It honors Erwin O. Smigel, a professor and Chair of Sociology at New York University, author of The Wall Street Lawyer, and the second editor of Social Problems from 1958 to 1961.
