The European Sleep Research Society’s Sustainable Travel Grants support environmentally responsible journeys to the Sleep Europe congress. Championed by the society’s Early Career Network (ECN), the initiative builds on the ESRS Sustainable Travel Policy while recognising the constraints of international travel. The 2026 offering supports registered participants travelling to Maastricht, the Netherlands, regardless of career stage or geographic location.
The grants encourage changes in travel behaviour, including cycling, train, bus or ferry travel, electric vehicles, sailing and carpooling. When flying is necessary, direct flights are encouraged over multiple connections. Shared accommodation and longer stays can also reduce environmental impact. A social media component extends the initiative beyond individual journeys: applicants share sustainable travel plans, photos or videos to inspire others to make more sustainable choices when attending congresses.
