Researching and applying the potential of Artificial Intelligence to foster climate resilience at the regional and local levels supports teams developing AI to improve climate data or sectoral adaptation.
Funder: European Commission
Due Dates: February 9, 2027 (Opening) | September 21, 2027 (Full application, 17:00 Brussels time)
Funding Amounts: Around €3 million per project; €12 million total topic budget; 4 expected grants
Summary: Supports AI research and innovation that improves climate adaptation knowledge or sectoral resilience for European regions and local authorities.
Key Information: Testing must involve at least 3 authorities for data-accessibility projects or 5 authorities for sectoral-adaptation projects.
This Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action supports the European Commission’s EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and the AI Continent Action Plan. It funds AI-powered solutions that make climate information more useful for regional and local decision-making, or improve adaptation processes and technologies in specific sectors while advancing their digital transformation.
Proposals must address one of two objectives: “AI for more accessible data” or “AI for sectoral adaptation.” They should identify a specific gap, go beyond the state of the art, and explain improvements over existing models, tools or applications—or justify entirely new solutions. Relevant sectoral applications include smart agriculture, construction and buildings, water and waste management, transport, and energy-system resilience. All projects should provide training and dissemination materials and address bias, representative data, and generative AI limitations and misinformation.
