Demonstration for Long-duration Battery Energy Storage Systems (BATT4EU Partnership) supports consortia testing non-commercial batteries for utilities or industry to strengthen grid resilience and flexibility.
Funder: European Commission
Due Dates: May 5, 2027 (Opening) | September 15, 2027 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: €9.4 million EU contribution per project; €18.8 million total topic budget; 2 expected grants
Summary: Supports system-level demonstrations of non-commercial battery technologies providing more than eight hours of storage for utilities or industry.
Key Information: Requires a consortium of at least three independent beneficiaries in three different EU Member States or Associated Countries, including one EU Member State.
This European Commission Horizon Europe Innovation Action implements the co-programmed BATT4EU Partnership. It supports system-level demonstrations of innovative long-duration battery storage for utility-scale energy systems or industrial consumers. Technologies must not yet be on the market; examples include novel redox flow, high-temperature, metal-air and multivalent systems, alongside other non-commercialised technologies or architectures.
Projects are expected to strengthen European grid stability, resilience and flexibility while reducing dependence on critical raw materials. The topic prioritises abundant, low-cost, sustainable materials with reliable, scalable European supply chains. Demonstrations should generate reproducible operational data for techno-economic analysis and contribute insights toward a coherent EU-wide stationary storage deployment strategy, supporting European energy autonomy and sustainability.
