Description
This European Commission Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action funds research into extreme events in Europe and globally, including isolated, compound and cascading hazards affecting lives, livelihoods, ecosystems, infrastructure and socio-economic sectors. Projects should combine past and recent climate data with multiple modelling approaches, including high-resolution Earth system models and digital twins. Innovative methods, including AI-based approaches to unprecedented high-impact events and their likelihood, are particularly welcome.
Research should include quantitative intercomparisons, retrospective analyses and case studies of recent extremes, demonstrating improvements across timescales from short-term weather to multi-decadal projections. Results are expected to improve understanding of hazards and their interactions, strengthen prediction and attribution, and inform risk assessments, adaptation policies and early warning systems. Work should support the European Climate Risk Assessment and contribute to the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
