Detection, monitoring, modelling, and attribution capabilities for SRM supports researchers studying SRM activities and their impacts to inform governance and biodiversity protection.
Funder: European Commission
Due Dates: February 16, 2027 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: €10 million total topic budget; one expected grant with a €10 million EU contribution
Summary: Supports observation and modelling research to detect and attribute SRM activities, assess their impacts, and inform governance and biodiversity protection.
Key Information: SRM advocacy, development, deployment, field experiments, and technical or operational SRM research are outside scope.
This European Commission Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action supports evidence for governing Solar Radiation Modification (SRM). It funds desk research, Earth observation and modelling to strengthen detection, monitoring and attribution capabilities and deter unilateral deployment. Results should support EU, Member State and Associated Country policymaking and international assessments, notably those of the IPCC.
The project should advance aerosol–cloud modelling for Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, Marine Cloud Brightening and Cirrus/Mixed Phase Cloud Thinning, assessing atmospheric chemistry, circulation, regional climate, oceans, societies and ecosystems. Research should inform a potential ecological early-warning system protecting biodiversity from changes in precipitation, light quality, primary production and sensitive habitats. The approach must be precautionary, bridge technical disciplines and humanities, and incorporate citizen and civil society engagement, transparency and open science.
