Description
Established in 1951 by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and administered by the AATS Foundation, this fellowship supports promising young academic cardiothoracic surgeons from outside North America. It aims to broaden surgical training, build international contacts, and develop future international leaders in cardiothoracic surgery. Each year, one cardiac surgeon and one thoracic surgeon receive support for six months at an identified North American host institution.
Fellowship activities include observation, consultation, teaching, and research. A primary host helps plan the course of study, with optional shorter visits to secondary centers for complementary experience. Surgeons accepted into ACGME-approved surgical fellowships may also apply, using the award for additional visits to North American cardiac or thoracic surgery programs during or after their ACGME fellowship.
