Description
The Federal-aid Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program is administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation to preserve and improve transportation infrastructure across Iowa. It assists public road jurisdictions with roads on Federal-aid routes and bridges on any public road, while also supporting transit capital improvements and eligible transportation planning by Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Planning Affiliations (RPAs).
Under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, eligible work includes Federal-aid highway, bridge and tunnel projects, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and transit capital projects such as intercity bus terminals. Regional organizations select projects through their Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs), which Iowa DOT reviews and incorporates into the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
