Description
Federal Historic Preservation Grants support local work to identify, document, plan for, educate the public about, and stabilize historic properties in South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) administers the program with National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund money. Projects must produce a tangible product or measurable result.
Survey and planning work can include historic-property surveys, National Register nominations, preservation plans and ordinances, design guidelines, educational activities, and studies or repair plans for individual properties. Stabilization funding addresses repairs to National Register-listed buildings, such as leaking roofs or deteriorated structural elements. SHPO prioritizes projects in Certified Local Governments (CLGs); it may fund other projects when funding remains after the required CLG allocation.
